Creating a Little Mermaid Skirt

Dineybounding is heaps of fun! I’ve done it a few times and it always makes me feel a little special. I love looking at pictures of other Disneybounders on the internet strutting their stuff at Disney theme parks and having a blast, it seems to be even more fun to dress in an outfit inspired by your favourite Disney character while actually at a Disney park! Living in Australia makes it slightly tricky to visit the Disney parks and I’ve never had the opportunity to attend one. However, all that is about to change, as I have booked a trip to Japan later this year and have tickets to both DisneyLand and DisneySea!

Even before the tickets were officially booked I was planning what kind of outfit to wear. I wanted something a little special to wear to DisneySea, what better character to Disneybound as than the original ocean princess; Ariel. Plus I’ve wanted an excuse for a long time to use the gorgeous oil slick scale fabric from the Yaya Han collection of Cosplay Fabrics, which is perfect for The Little Mermaid!

I used the pattern from the Tilly and the Buttons book. I particularly appreciated the instructions of sewing stretch fabric on a regular sewing machine because my over-locker still terrifies me. I will make friends with it eventually, but for now I’m loving this sneaky trick for easing myself into sewing with stretch fabrics.

Sadly I didn’t take any pictures of the construction process. But I pretty much followed the steps in this book for the Bibi Skirt to the letter. The instructions are fabulously easy to follow and eased my concerns about sewing stretch fabric quite a lot.

Then I got to take my shiny new skirt down to the waterfront to take some pictures! It’s winter at the moment, so it was an incredibly short photo-shoot lounging on the frigid seaside rocks, but the sun was beautiful, and I love how it made the scales on the skirt shine.

The purple top and the red scarf helped me show off Ariel’s colours. I particularly loved how this dinglehopper brooch tied everything together! I picked it up at a convention from Fractured Lace, I remember having a lovely chat to her about acrylic jewellery and how many awesome things there are  in that category of shiny thing.

I can’t wait to wear this skirt to DisneySea. It turned out better than I’d hoped for and I think it will make my day extra fun!
