Week four of Sartorial Geek’s Fashion Fix Challenge was such a fantastic theme; complex female characters. This was a good challenge as I find most showy merch focuses on the male characters, so I needed to get a bit creative.
I put together four outfits for this week, all different types of complex female characters from different types of media that I love. It was fun to think of ways to feature them, I may try to put together more outfits like this at a later date.
During this week my comic book club met up, and the book of the month was the first in the DC Bombshells series, which is a series I love! My favourite character is Batwoman, and the joint prompts of the fashion challenge and comic book club were far too much, so I had to put together a Batwoman inspired outfit.
Thankfully she has an iconic colour scheme that I could lean into, with all black clothing and a big red scarf draped across my shoulders. Added the hat from my Bombshell Batwoman cosplay for that little bit of extra Batwoman flair.
I think this was my favourite outfit of the week!
I love the Disney Villains. The further I move into adulthood the more I appreciate the self-determination and complexity of characters like Ursula. Plus she has far and away the best design of any character in her movie. And the best song. And Flotsam and Jetsam are just darling! So I had to put together an outfit inspired by her.
The outfit was based around my beautiful Rocklove Jewellery shell locket necklace, which opens to reveal a chain of musical notes worked in silver. I paired it with a comfortable purple poncho my Mum knitted me then spent the evening warm and snuggly reading a good book and bounding as a happy sea witch.
Another character I loved growing up and am loving more and more the older I get is Morticia Addams. She’s my absolute favourite spooky goth lady and her relationship with Gomez has always been my #relationshipgoals.
My outfit inspired by Morticia had to start from a base of my gorgeous Vanyanis lace top. I love wearing this beautiful piece of clothing, it always makes me feel super fancy, and that was absolutely the mood I was going for. I paired it with a flowy black cardi to which I pinned this perfect Morticia pin from Emetic Art that has one of my favourite Morticia Addams quotes;
What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.
And of course a week of outfits inspired by complex female characters wouldn’t be complete without one dedicated to Carol Danvers, the mighty Captain Marvel! I have what may be considered and embarrassingly large collection of Captain Marvel inspired tops and jumpers, embarrassing as it’s impossible to wear them all at once and one does develop favourites.
This time I chose my newly arrived Elhoffer Design Kree cardi. It was comfy and subtle for a casual Friday at the office. I added in the promotional Kree symbol pin the the lapel as well for a little extra sparkle.
This week was a fantastic challenge. I feel like I could have done more than four outfits if I planned a little better, so I may put together some more outfits like this in the future to pay tribute to the characters that I missed, Silk and the 13th Doctor being chief amongst them! The outfits I put together this week were fun and covered a bunch of lady characters that inspire me, but I want more. Stay tuned!
