Today James O’Barr, creator of The Crow, came to All Star Comics in Melbourne. So I got to meet James O’Barr! Younger gothy me would be so pleased right now! Younger gothy me would have been less pleased with my awkwardness, but I bet gothy me would have acted just the same! Only perhaps she would have walked with dignity through the zig-zag line dividers instead of putting arms out slightly and zooming around the corners like an aeroplane, but younger gothy me was a little bit too mature for her own good.
Meeting James O’Barr was amazing. He is one of those comics people who I would never have thought I’d ever get to meet in real life! He was lovely too! And I got a picture with him and even managed to speak mostly full sentences to him, which I’m counting as a win!
Got some loot as well. This beautiful purple print and this adorable little pin. As well as a signature of course! I asked for James to sign the inside of the book, and he offered to sign on the title page “like a real author”. Which of course he is!
But there is a little bit of a story for today. This signing event happened after work on the Thursday before a long weekend. There are so many things to do right now, so I made sure I had my copy of The Crow out and ready to go the night before. But of course I forgot it! I realised on the way to work and had a tiny panic, I was really excited to meet James O’Barr and now I wouldn’t have a book to hide behind! So I went to the comic book store around the corner from work to see if they had a copy…. I was incredibly lucky to pick up their very last one! Sometimes having a comic book store around the corner from work can be very dangerous, but today it was fantastic.
So everything turned out, but now I have two copies of The Crow.
